With competition increasing in the mobile video game business, Sony on Thursday is coming out with a smaller, lighter version of its PlayStation Portable device called the PSP Go.
Sony is No. 2 in the portable video game market behind rival Nintendo (Other OTC:NTDOY.PK – News) and its dual-screen DS devices. But both companies now face a growing threat from Apple , which is heavily promoting its iPhone and iPod Touch media players as game devices.
Sony's PSP Go plays downloadable games on internal flash memory. The games can be purchased online, including over Wi-Fi wireless connections, much like games for Apple's devices.
Earlier models of PSP play games on Universal Media Disc, a packaged format sold in stores. Sony will continue to sell its older model PSP 3000 and UMD content for the foreseeable future, says Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America.
The PSP Go, which sports a slick slide-out control panel, costs $250. The PSP 3000 sells for $170.
By comparison, Nintendo's entry-level DS Lite costs $130 and the higher-end DSi costs $170. Apple's iPod Touch starts at $199.
Sony is comfortable with its position in the portable video games market, Dille says. It's targeting serious gamers, while Apple and Nintendo are going after casual and younger gamers, respectively.
“Each company is coming at the market from a slightly different perspective,” Dille said. “In Apple's case, theirs is a phone that plays small games. None of them are terribly deep or immersive. They're sort of time-killing applications.”
Meanwhile, Sony's PSP delivers “a console-like experience” with hard-button controls that gamers prefer, he says. Apple's games use touch and motion controls via its devices' touch-screens and built-in accelerometers.
Sony's PSP devices are game machines first and foremost, Dille says. Apple's iPhone is a smart phone, pocket computer and media player, while the iPod Touch lacks the phone functions but has the other features.
“The PSP Go is a far better game machine than the iPod Touch or the iPhone, if you want a real gaming experience,” said Billy Pidgeon, an analyst with Game Changer Research.
Sony has sold 53 million PSPs worldwide since the gadget debuted in December 2004. Apple has sold 30 million iPhones and 20 million iPod Touches for a total 50 million potential game devices.
Nintendo still leads by a mile with the Nintendo DS, having sold 108 million units worldwide since the device launched in November 2004.
At the same time that Sony is distancing the PSP Go from Apple's gadgets, it's trying to match them on features. Sony's download store, like Apple's app store, will sell cheap mini-games for casual game players. It also offers entertainment downloads, including music, television shows and movies.
Sony has been working with third-party game developers to make their software available for download to the PSP. It is trying to encourage game publishers to take content that retail stores are ignoring or offering limited shelf space for and put it in the download store, Dille says.
“The beauty of a digital store is that there's unlimited shelf space,” Dille said.
Sony likely will phase out the use of UMD games because it sees a bigger future in digital downloads, Pidgeon says. Also, Sony has had a problem with piracy with the UMD games, he says.
Sony is counting on exclusive content to drive PSP sales this holiday season, including versions of driving game “Gran Turismo,” puzzle game “Little Big Planet” and military game “Socom.” Those first two console franchises will be making their portable version debuts this fall.
Sony's PSP Go should sell well initially as hard-core gamers buy the device, Pidgeon says. The big question, he says, is how well it will sell a year from now.
The PSP Go features 16 gigabytes of internal memory, as well as expandable storage for games, videos, photos, music and other data. More than 225 games will be available at launch.
