Tech showcase looks to regain “wow” factor

SAN FRANCISCO – Technology leaders from Microsoft to Intel and Nokia will face new rivals; 3D-TV will be all the rage; and a flurry of glitzy wireless devices — from e-readers to ever-smaller personal computers — will make their debuts. The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week promises to showcase new battlegrounds in technology, and with an economic recovery slowly taking root, attendees are looking for more dazzle than last year, when CES was perhaps most notable for a lack of major news.

Justice Department urges FCC to free spectrum

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Justice Department urged the agency that oversees the communications industry to free up unused spectrum as a way to make the high-speed Internet market more competitive. In comments to the Federal Communications Commission on Monday, the Justice Department said the best way to promote broadband competition was to free up more spectrum and to organize any spectrum auctions so big wireless providers in any given area do not easily win the new spectrum.

Freescale takes aim at tablet computer market

SAN FRANCISCO – Chipmaker Freescale Semiconductor Inc is staking its claim on the tablet computer market, an emerging product category that will generate plenty of interest in 2010. Although next-generation tablet PCs are scarcely evident on the market, the technology world is abuzz about their potential, as Apple Inc is expected to unveil its offering in 2010.

Spain’s EU webpage hijacked by Mr Bean

MADRID – An unidentified hacker briefly hijacked Spain’s official website for its presidency of the European Union, inserting a large smiling picture of comic character Mr Bean, an official said on Monday. The supposed resemblance of the bumbling slapstick character played by British actor Rowan Atkinson to Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has been a running joke in Spain for years.

Lenovo unveils ThinkPad design with AMD chips

SAN FRANCISCO – Lenovo Group Ltd <0992.HK> is unveiling a new look for its classic ThinkPad line, and is including Advanced Micro Devices Inc microprocessors in the laptops for the first time. The new ThinkPad Edge series, with a sleeker design, simplified keyboard and slightly larger keys, will come in three screen sizes, three colors and start at $549 in the United States.

Technology not as advanced by 2010 as some had hoped

NEW YORK – Despite iPods, genetic sequencing, the Internet and Twitter, nearly a third of Americans said they thought there would be more technological advances by the year 2010. Not everyone expected to be living like The Jetsons, the space age television cartoon series of the early 1960s, but the Zogby International survey of more than 3,000 adults in the United States showed many were less than enthusiastic about how far we have come by the dawn of a new decade.

Tweets, sexting “unfriended” in U.S. banned word list

KANSAS CITY – If you recently tweeted about how you were chillaxin for the holiday, take note: Fifteen particularly over- or mis-used words and phrases have been declared “shovel-ready” to be “unfriended” by a U.S. university’s annual list of terms that deserve to be banned. After thousands of nominations of words and phrases commonly used in marketing, media, technology and elsewhere, wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University on Thursday issued their 35th annual list of words that they believe should be banned.

Taiwan’s Asustek to free up subsidiary by June – report

TAIPEI – Taiwan netbook PC pioneer Asustek <2357.TW> has approved plans to simplify cutting investment in its subsidiary Pegatron, which could be listed in June, a newspaper said on Saturday. The company’s board agreed to the plans on Friday for reducing its share in Pegatron, a fully owned contract manufacturing subsidiary, by June 1, a month earlier than anticipated, Taiwan’s Commercial Times reported.

Apple wins appeal over alleged iPod hearing loss

NEW YORK – A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected a class-action lawsuit seeking to hold Apple Inc responsible for possible hearing loss caused by using its popular iPod music player. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco affirmed a 2008 district court ruling that the plaintiffs failed to show that use of the iPod poses an unreasonable risk of noise-induced hearing loss.

Nokia’s latest patent strike on Apple a risk, but may pay off

HELSINKI – Nokia’s latest patent strike against Apple underscores the changing dynamics of the cell phone market, with the sector leader no longer holding the whip hand over rivals in terms of product development. But analysts believe the risks involved in stepping into a legal minefield to help make up lost ground, notably in the fast-growing smartphone market, could pay dividends given the huge stock of patents Nokia has built up as a founding father of the handset industry.
